A generation knows him for Disney songs and Candle in the Wind for Diana (blech).

I still say “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” is one of the greatest songs ever, and when he was young, Elton could SING

Look at this shit!

Lastly, one of the best movie scenes ever relies on “Tiny Dancer.”

That scene gives me chills. Elton was a madman in the 70s.

Phil Collins kinda did the same.

I always remember 70s Elton though.

More like people started embracing absolutely terrible fucking music as America’s collective creativity started nosediving and Sir Elton did what he had to to keep making money. For evidence of that, look at some of the shite music posted to Oppo on a regular basis. The stuff that people consider Rock ‘n Roll nowadays is fucking embarassing. I hope all these current “rockers” meet Lemmy in hell some day. He’ll have some fun with them.

Here is my sharing . Elton John 11/17/70. I found it in the bargain bin. His best was the first. Give it a listen.

Have you heard him “sing” lately? He just mumbles and slurs. I’m Still Standing was his last song that I can listen to and that doesn’t hold a candle, so to speak, to anything from Madman or Yellow Brick Road.

I’d say no more than Wayne’s World “ruined” Queen — if anything, that was a big turning point in their popularity/resurgence.

Everyone who has been around for a couple decades sells out somehow. The Who and the opening theme to CSI. The Stones and the infamous Windows 95 “Start me up” campaign. Zeppelin in Cadillac ads.

In the first video, Elton is lip syncing. Nobody sounds that perfect live.

It really started to go down hill for him when he nearly lost his voice in 1986. This is what he sounded like before he had surgery to remove polyps on his vocal cords:

The surgery changed his singing voice and he just couldn’t hit the highs anymore... which made me sad.

He had a few pretty good albums after... but it’s mostly schlock from the 1990s and on... which I blame on him going to rehab, getting healthy and then becoming a happier person... especially after he married his lover.

Many artists need conflict and misery to make good art... and Elton John is one of them.

How many artists (as in: with song writing roles) have been truly good beyond an age of, what, 40? Maybe even 35. I’m not talking about being capable of playing good music but about creating new music. Surely we can all think of a few but the vast, vast majority of truly great music is created by people in their 20s and early 30s.

Unless he pulls a Michael Jackson, a Bill Cosby, or a Phil Spector he’ll be just fine.

Now, if I could talk to you all about Blaze of Glory by Bon Jovi and wonder why the hell our classic rock station plays it every time I’m in the car with Mrs McMike.

Now, I’m a big fan of the classics man, but take a step back, brotruck. People are allowed to like different music, and musical styles change. The same statement you made was probably made by the people that grew up with Ike Turner, and complained about Robert Plant, but give me Led Zeppelin over the Delmore Brothers anyday, despite them all being R&R.

Now have some very recent music that sounds like very old music to cheer your happy ass up.

Eddie Murphy

Aerosmith

Phil Collins

Elton John has a special place of respect for me in one regard:

Everyone who has worked for him or served him in a restaurant or whatever confirms he treats his staff/servers better than any other celebrity. Even the grocery store cashiers can’t shut up about what a nice guy he is.

Source: A (quite well-off) friend of mine had some household staff who used to work in one of EJ’s homes (until EJ sold that home and the staff downgraded to working for my friend), and those people in turn knew lots of other people who had worked for EJ or had served him in places.

I’ve been saying for years he needs to go on a coke binge with Bernie and cut a record...like the old days.

Check out my friends Low Cut Connie if you like some piano based rock and roll. Even Elton has taken notice and plays them on his radio show.

I don’t really like old music. I don’t even really like good music. However, I can tell the difference between music, and a commercial pretending to be music. Yes, people are allowed to like terrible things, including that boy band you posted pretending to be Led Zeppelin. And if people are allowed to like terrible mindless music, then I’m allowed to form an opinion about their love of mindless crap.

I don’t disagree with you, but Rocket 88 is considered by many the first rock & roll song, so... it’s come far and gotten wide.

You’re not wrong, but being so absolute about things like this is not expressing an opinion when you state it as fact. Just saying, there’s a difference there.

Rocket 88 has soul to it, unlike a lit of the later commercialized radioband music. The sound can change, but you still have to have soul. I’m a hardcore kid, so my opinion on rock is mostly irrelevant.

I’m with you. Wherever it’s coming from, and whatever it sounds like, it has to be genuine. I don’t know your thoughts on a group like the Avett Brothers, but I recently watched “May It Last” - it was really interesting to get an inside look into their history, relationship and process.

Counterpoint: in ten, twenty years’ time... will young people know who Diana was? Honestly, I am not so sure. But I am pretty certain youngsters will know Elton (or at least some of his better songs).

You are dead on the money that Candle... is weak and sentimental; so are most love letters. I believe it was a sincere piece; obviously that does not make it good.
